Docker is the foundation for running OpenClaw safely and cleanly. Letβs install it.
Run this command on your Pi:
curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com | sh
This official script:
Takes about 2-5 minutes. Let it finish.
By default, you need sudo to run Docker commands. To avoid this:
sudo usermod -aG docker kev
(Replace kev with your username)
The group change requires a fresh login:
exit
Then SSH back in:
docker run hello-world
Expected output:
Hello from Docker!
This message shows that your installation appears to be working correctly.
If you see this, Docker is working!
Check if itβs already installed:
docker-compose --version
If not installed, install it:
sudo apt install docker-compose -y
Verify:
docker-compose --version
You should see:
Docker Compose version v1.29.2
(Version number may differ)
So Docker starts automatically when your Pi boots:
sudo systemctl enable docker
sudo systemctl start docker
Verify itβs running:
sudo systemctl status docker
You should see:
β docker.service - Docker Application Container Engine
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/docker.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
If you still get permission errors after adding your user to the docker group:
# Re-login completely
exit
ssh [email protected]
# Or start a fresh shell
newgrp docker
On Pi with 2GB RAM, installation might struggle. If it hangs:
sudo fallocate -l 2G /swapfile
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com | sh
Check your setup:
docker info
Look for:
Docker is installed and ready. Next, weβll set up Docker Compose to run OpenClaw.
